CHARGE Labs Research Team

CHARGE (Centre for Hybrid Automotive Research and Green Energy) Labs was founded by Dr. Narayan C. Kar who is a full Professor in Electrified Transportation Systems at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Kar’s research interest focuses on the design, control and testing of electric machines and drives for electric vehicles in an effort to push the boundaries of innovations in electric drive technology and improve performance as well as reduce overall cost of electrified vehicles. Dr. Kar held the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) position in Electrified Transportation Systems from 2008 to 2018. He is often called upon to provide expert opinions to government and non-government organizations and industry leaders.

Under Dr. Kar’s leadership, CHARGE Labs research (CLR) program currently focuses on four major research areas for Electrified Vehicles: 1) Electric machine development; 2) Power electronic converters and control; 3) electric powertrain optimization and control; and 4) Powertrain component testing. CLR program and test facility is equipped with fully functional industrial scale electrified vehicle motor and drive test systems, that allow the program to produce transformative and disruptive research results in the area electrified vehicles.

Dr. Kar’s research team currently consists of six post-doctoral personnel, eight PhD and six Master students and two research support staff as well as many research interns. CLR program is at the forefront of the leading edge of innovation in electric drive technologies, through active collaborations with Ford Motor Company of Canada, D&V Electronics, Magna International Inc., CanmetMATERIALS of Natural Resources Canada, and many university professors from mechanical, materials and thermal disciplines from all across Canada. In addition to promoting creativity and collaborations through industry funding and support, CLR program receives research funding from many government funding agencies including Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Ontario Research Fund and Ontario Centres of Excellence.
